Trails

Sierra de Castellar de los Bueyes

A track half way up the slope, among cork oaks and strawberry trees, with the olive groves of Horcajo below.

Cover photo: the olive-grove valley of Horcajo de los Montes.

It is one of the only two routes in the park where you can go by bicycle, and also one of the most comfortable on foot: five kilometres, there and back, with almost no slopes. It shares its first kilometre with the Plaza de los Moros, so the two can be linked in one morning.

The route

The route follows a track that runs half way up the Sierra de Castellar de los Bueyes, always on the shady side. At first there are rockroses and heathers; then the path enters a cork oak wood with holm oaks and Portuguese oaks and a very dense understorey of strawberry tree, laurustinus, terebinth, buckthorn and heather, with some pedriza on the left.

On that side the valley of the Arroyo del Rubial opens up for almost the whole walk: olive groves, pastures with sheep and, far off, the Montes de Toledo. Look at the sky too: the park guide points out that the Cinereous Vulture, which breeds not far away, can be seen flying here, together with the Short-toed Snake Eagle, the Booted Eagle and the Golden Eagle.

When the track reaches a paved road, already outside the park, you can go back the way you came or continue to Horcajo to make it a circuit, about four and a half hours in total from the village.

Getting there

The starting point is the same as for the Plaza de los Moros: at km 54 of the CM-4106, one kilometre from Horcajo de los Montes towards Alcoba, next to a football pitch, a track on the left leads to the car park. More about the village on the Horcajo de los Montes page.
